Tragic single moms.

“I was like you guys once. . . Beautiful, innocent, and a student, but my boyfriend left me like this,” she broke into tear.

It was a CAPP (Career and Personal Planning) hour in my high school, a group of women with babies walked into our classroom. I became stiff because here I was, trying to learn how to adapt a new culture and I thought to myself, ‘oh my god, what are they doing in here, aren’t they supposed to be in other building?’

True, they were supposed to be in other building, but that day we were talking about “Condoms, and mishaps,” and our teacher thought ‘what better ways to talk about mishaps by having real examples right next to us, right?’
So here they were, single moms and their children, and I didn’t know what it really means to be a single mom at that time. Of course, I had seen them in my high school going in and out from other building. They all looked fatigued, and sad from all their troubles.

I just thought single moms just meant a middle-aged woman who had a career and she just wanted to have a baby, so all she had to do was adopt a baby or a child. But boy, was I wrong! A single mom, in that case was having a child in high school ages, and it was the hardest thing they had to do because they had to handle housework, schoolwork, manage a part-time job, and of course, they had to take care of their babies.

I was so shocked at hearing this because in Asian culture, there weren’t many single moms, but if they had one, their parents had to hide them, or gave a baby away for disgracing their family. Of course, they didn’t or rather, not encourage them to continue their educations further, and of course, teachers in Asia definitely didn’t teach us how to prevent the teenaged pregnancy, but here I was in CAPP hour, studied how not to be another single mom.

After the CAPP hour, I felt as if I was in some weird space and return to the earth, and made just before lunchtime because I couldn’t believe what I just heard and how calm they all were.

At the end of the CAPP hour, the most important thing they left me was; they begged us not to be another single mom, even if how many times boyfriends kept saying, “I love you.”

If you are interested in this subjects and want to find out more, go to www.pregnantteenhelp.org, or search 'teenage pregnancy.'

Learning From Birds

When I was a little girl, our neighbour next to our house raised a parrot. Every morning, the owner trained the parrot to speak "good morning" or "hello" in his backyard.

He made unremitting effort training the parrot, but the bird never said a word! After several months, the owner got frustrated and angry: "why didn't you say a word? Say, good morning! Stupid!" Afterwards, as a greeting, every morning the owner said same words to the bird: "Good morning, stupid!" It is quite evident that the owner had already given up his intention.

In a summer morning, a flock of children in the neighbourhood entered the owner's backyard in an ecstasy of delight to tease the parrot. We completely surrounded the cage and made fun of the parrot. We laughed loudly and copy the owner's voice: "Good morning." Unexpectedly, the parrot spoke in a standard Mandarin: "Stupid!"

Everyone laughed heartily at the bird's marvellous response, and the owner was overjoyed at the parrot's sound of voice. After speaking, the bird turned round and was immersed in silence again.

In China, we have a idiom: "Repeat another person's words like a parrot." It's a negative definition about people being yesman of other persons without any ideas and thoughts of their own or being an echo of a man of authority for profit.

But, in my mind, everything has its good and bad sides. I have some positive thoughts about parrot by the impression from the bird. What a proper response it was in that situation! It seems that the bird react to the children on purpose. A good word is timely no matter it is repeated from others or not. A timely word is more effective than those wise and brillant ideas spoken in wrong time and at wrong place.

Sometimes, people have to exactly repeat and cope other's speaking like a parrot. Learning English is a good example.

In China, my textbook taught me to answer "not at all" after "thank you." When I came to Canada, I realized that the proper answer should be "you are welcome." Don't waste time to ask "why" and "how." Leave the question for linguists. Just repeat and cope those words: "Oh, boy!" " Oops!" and "Its not...no more!"

My son came to Canada with me at the same time, but his English is much better than me. The reason is that, as a child, he never hesitate to repeat or copy other's speaking, wording, pronounciation, and even tone. I have found that people whose English are better all are a little bit "parrot type" persons. They are good at imitation and never shame for repeating and copying others. If you hope to learn English well, you should learn from parrots first!

The Value of Regular Writing Practice

The students are writing, lips pursed in concentration, in a quiet so complete you can hear the clock’s tick on the wall. The English 11 and 12 classes are taking part in an in-class writing session at the Pearson ALC.

Essays I marked this week recounted student experiences with learning English, and many of them mentioned a need for regular practice. The stakes have to be high, however, so I make in class writing count (though not for as many marks early in the term as in the final weeks). Thus, the pin-droppingly quiet concentration among my students that leads, I believe, to far better results in the long run.

A time limit concentrates the mind. Dawdling procrastination is costly when it leads to a loss of course marks. My students know this and respond accordingly.

But what of the argument that writing is “recursive,” implying a lengthy process of revision and fine tuning that leads to a student’s finest work? My answer is to do both; I allowed two weeks to write their first essay but also, regularly, test students with an in-class writing assignment.

It could be boring, but I choose materials carefully to ensure it is not. Topical essays written by fellow Canadians on topics as diverse as a favourite but imperfect teacher or the impact of the present recession serve to motivate students. They see themselves reflected, so everyone finds something to say.

This week, students responded to their first short story. Recently, I reversed my usual course practice and taught poetry first, while, at the same time, I introduced students to the integrated quote and, most importantly, to finding something worth saying. Working with a poem of only 150 words, the task of selecting specific words to quote is easier to handle and, as a result, most students picked up the basics.

I’ll keep on asking my classes to write as much as possible every week and intend to make sure of that by assigning in-class writing, requiring regular contributions to our blog and giving frequent out-of-class assignments. By writing more, each student will build on and practice skills regularly, making their practice perfect with time.

Tea Tour

Like most Chinese people, I like drinking tea, Chinese tea. It is really an enjoyment while smelling the aroma of fresh tea and taking a sip. Not only is tea popular in China, but many other countries’ people love it as well, such as Britain and Japanese. However, different country has different tea and tea culture is quite different. As a Chinese, I prefer to Chinese tea culture. If you are new to Chinese tea, this page contains interesting Chinese tea knowledge that you want to know.

According to the different methods by which it is processed, Chinese tea may be classified into five categories. They are: green tea, oolong tea, black tea, compressed tea, and scented tea. Among them, many foreigners are familiar with the green tea. The Long Jing tea, of the green type, has a reputation both at home and abroad. And people have relish for its fantastic smelling, the delicate tasting, as well as the lovely shape.

Tea plays an important role in Chinese social and emotional life. Tea is offered to a guest immediately entering a Chinese home. This is a way of showing respect of a visitor. If someone makes a mistake, and he wants to show his regret and asks for other's understanding, he may pour a cup of tea to them. In the traditional Chinese marriage ceremony, both the bride and groom sever tea to their parents to express their gratitude.

Chinese tea culture not only expresses drinking, but also tasting. Tea drinking is for refreshment and tonic effect, but tea tasting is a higher level drinking. It doesn’t only satisfy one's thirst, but people enjoy a tea course. Tea and tea wares should match surrounding elements such as breeze, bright moon, pines, bamboo, and snow. All these show the ultimate goal of Chinese culture: the harmonious unity of human beings with nature.

Modern studies in benefits of Chinese tea have found that Chinese tea contains a considerable sum of chemical substances, which can improve the immune system, slow down aging, lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure and even prevent cancer. While another bites an apple saying one apple a day keeps the doctor away, I will drink my tea saying one cup a day keeps worry away.

Chinese Dumplings

A popular saying in China about Chinese dumplings holds truth, “There is nothing more delicious than Chinese dumplings.” It shows Chinese people are quite fond of the popular food---Chinese dumplings.

Chinese dumplings became my favourite food since my early childhood. At that time, after the round-bellied dumplings were dished out from the boiling water by my mother, the magic smell was immediately wafted into my nose. My eyes fixed on the dumplings and my mouth watered. I couldn’t help taking one by chopsticks to make my mouth full. My mother said that I always had a good appetite to dumplings.

I had joined my family group of making dumplings since I became a teenager. We bustled around in the kitchen. My mom made the dough for the dumpling skin; my pa chopped the pork into ground meat for the dumpling stuffing. My young sister and I prepared all ingredients—crushed garlic, ginger and a bit of vegetables, mixed with sesame oil, soy sauce and salt. Then four of us began to make dumplings. At that time, we cooked dumplings only on big days or entertaining my parents’ friends, so the food of dumplings often brought a lot of enjoyment.

Nowadays making dumplings is no longer the complex work. I can buy all the things I need from supermarkets. So dumplings often appear on the dinner table. My husband and my son are the same as me, still having good appetite to dumplings, and the happy feeling that dumplings bring to the family still carries on as before.

Since I have lived in Vancouver, I often entertain my friends using the Chinese traditional food—Chinese dumpling. Two of my friends are blue eyes and blond hairs. After they eat my dumplings, they like the food very much. When we get together, our topic always begin with Chinese dumplings, and then lead to the Chinese food culture. Now they know a lot about the dumplings and Chinese food culture. Instead of using forks and knives, they can skillfully take the slippery dumpling into the mouths by using chopsticks.

Besides the delicious taste, Chinese dumpling not only can create happy atmosphere, but also can be a good medium for inheriting and spreading Chinese food culture. That is why the Chinese dumplings have passed down from generation to generation in China, and also have extended far beyond the China boundary.

Laoshan Mountain (the second draft)

Everyone who visits the beautiful harbor city Qing-Tao would visit Laoshan Mountain. And everyone who visits Laoshan Mountain would dream to see the Upper Taoism Abbey. It is not only for its wonderful landscape but also for the famous legend of the fairy lady, “Purple snow”, written by the great writer Pu song-ling three hundred years ago.

In an early summer day, we climbed Laoshan. Beside the trail, trees were thick. Between the clefts and huge boulders, the clear spring water ran their way. The shadows of trees and the cool mountain breeze made us feel the summer hadn’t come here yet. Laoshan was a special cooler world in this time.

The trails leaded us to the top and met the creeks many times. Luckily, some boulders lied on the stream for crossing the water. However sometimes we waded across.

While the trail turned into the ravine. It was so quiet like an area untouched. Only one or two bird chirpings broke this perpetual tranquil.

Suddenly Xiao Xie shouted:”Purple snow, how are you. I’m coming to see you!” Then his sound echoed in the valley back and forth. “Are you crazy? Xiao XIe.”—another one teased him aloud and the echoes responsed again.

Before we saw, we heard the sound of rushing water. Turned around the cliff, I felt the deliciously cool that the misty spray from the fall on my skin. Water tumbled over the rocks and formed a deep pond under its foot. This wonderful place invited us to a snack.

After snacking, we freshened again. Some searched around to find berries and wild fruits. Xiao Xie swam and splashed in the pond. I stood on a huge cliff to have a good sight-seeing. Surveying down the trail that we trudged, I stunned that the following hikers were just small as ants climbing the tree. The East China Sea waved in horizon, and the Laoshan Mountain loomed behind up to the cloud sky.

Ascended on and on. Among the green, luxuriant pines and the mist, the Upper Taoism Abbey was insight.

To be surprised, the Abbey was far from a palace; it more liked a common cottage – the black brick wall with the stone tiles. It was so simple both in shape and colour. A pond crippled in the yard and some ancient trees surrounded around. A mulberry tree attracted our attention, for a big stone tablet stood beside, signed “Purple Snow”. Hundreds years later, the canopy still flourished enough. Some admirers took photos with her; Xiao Xie was the one of them. The mysterious love story caused so much imagination in mind generation and generation. But, was there anyone who knew where the fairy lady is?

Turned out to the side yard, I met a Taoism priest.

”Why this Abbey is so different from the majesty Wu -dang Mountain Abbey?—that’s a real palace! “ I asked.

“Wu-dang was built by the Emperor of Ming dynasty for showing his subjects he promoted Taoism. But ours embodies the true qualities of the Taoism—simple and nature. “

On the peak of Laoshan Mountain, I gazed into the distance—the boundless and indistinct East China Sea. What vast scenery it was! I felt that I were a drop of water merging in this vast. Seeing the white clouds float leisurely above, I couldn’t help to think: “who am I?” and “where am I going?”

Set in Forks, a small rainy city in Washington, Stephanie Meyer’s novel Twilight is the story of a Seventeen year-old girl who falls in love with a boy who turns out to be not human.

When Isabella “Bella” Swan moves from Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father in Forks, she sees a handsome boy named Edward Cullen at school and feels a strong attraction to him. Then she learns that he is from a vampire family who called themselves “vegetarian” because they drink animal blood instead of humans. They both fall in love with each other, while Edward struggles with his instinct not kill Bella by drinking her blood.

In one scene, the Cullens invite Bella to a baseball game, but because of her clumsiness, Bella decides to be an audience instead. During the game, three vampires from a different coven (who drink human blood) give the Cullens an unexpected visit, leaving them no time to hide Bella, the only human there.

James, the head of the other coven is very drawn to drinking Bella’s blood, and he, seeing the Cullens hover over just a simple human who is a prey to him, makes the whole thing his “favourite game”. That is where Bella’s trouble begins. Will the Cullens be able to save her or will they all die…?

This book shows us that love is irrational and that the choice of staying with that beloved one can be risky in some situation. Twilight is the most popular book I have read and it is very easy to read despite its size. There is also a movie with the same title, but many scenes in the book were not in the movie version. People who love vampire and romance should read this book.

Many musicians rely on shallow themes to create music. Yet there are few bands out there that push the limit on human understanding and emotion. They search deeper in the human mind and try and find inner meanings to desire between people. These artists tend to have lyrics that make you think far after the song is over.

Over the course of six years Anberlin has slowly made a name for themselves in the music industry. They have broken through impossible odds to set them self apart from the rest. Giving up was never on their agenda. They knew exactly what it would take to advance forward and continue to recreate their sound. Using their spiritual outlook on the world they managed to find a way into the hearts of alternative rock fans worldwide. Originally starting out as a christian rock band, they realized breaking from that mold was a crucial step in the direction they wanted. Their focus was to sing about meaningful issues that would keep people thinking and questioning their existence on earth.

The latest album by Anberlin ended up doing exactly that. New Surrender is a 12 track harmony of sound. Blending rock undertones with beautiful melodic vibes. Stephan Christians voice has matured at such an alarming rate I was shocked by its advance. The transitions between his ballads and the quick speaking renderings of emotion merge perfectly. Songs such as 'Retrace' hold onto a more mellow melody then the rest of the tunes. While many of the songs are very upbeat and aggressive, they hold true to the same universal meaning. That every person on earth has a purpose different from everyone else. 'The Resistance' talks about how each of us can spend so much time pushing away our true feelings we lose ourselves in the process.

Overall Anberlin is a brilliant group of artists that really get what it means to sing your heart out. They understand its about risks, and taking themselves out of comfort zones to learn and grow as musicians as well as people. Singing about real issues that fellow humans deal with on a regular basis. Along with the universal importance that is acceptance.

I would highly recommend this band to anyone who wants to listen to music that inspires people. Music that can actually take you on a journey to better understand yourself, and the people around you.

The Cubic Life

Lily was punished to stand in the middle of the yard outside the classroom one day in her grade two for not wearing the school uniform. Her teacher said the class looked more orderliness without her. It was such a sunny day; Lily stood outside watching the catkins drifting from place to place; feeling the spring wind gently stroking her face. She felt so delighted than sitting inside the dark box and listening to the teacher praising a silly boy who peed in his pants during class time to maintain the class disciplines.

Having an IQ of 150 and remaining fast-learning didn’t make Lily in favour of most of her Chinese teachers.

In grade three, Lily was detained by her teacher after class for talking without permission. Her mom picked her from school without scolding her. This indifferent attitude towards Lily’s “bad behaviours” provoked the teacher. After that, she was criticised for any possible reasons for her hair, clothes or homework and declared --“a hopeless, bad apple” and her mom—“an irresponsible parent”.

After entering secondary school: Lily got troubles for breaking class disciplines, refusing wearing school uniforms, having brotherly relationship with boys, punching ear holes and not finishing extra homework.

She suffered for being herself. She didn’t join the Communism League when everybody did in high school—this almost failed her to become the Chairwoman in university. The instructor made her join it one month before the election and this time, she compromised.

Being a Chinese means she has to choose between her personal freedom and the adaption to the environment. She’s supposed to be obedient only. No exception is accepted or expected. The best personality in is no personality. Wearing, talking, thinking . . . anything different may cause her extra attention or criticizing, even a disaster.

The Water Cube –Chinese National Aquatic Center is a perfect symbolism for Chinese society. Individually, everybody is squeezed into a shaped, cubic box contributing together to the society into a massive cube. So the whole society is harmonic and easily to be ruled.

After graduated from university, Lily was arranged a permanent job in a governmental company by her parents. She resigned within two years and set up her own business—benefited from her “bad personality”, she did well. She still had to face many “cubic people”. Sometimes she thought she escaped. But it wasn’t true. She found was still inside, in a different layer only. The cube outside was bigger therefore she could extend slightly. People around her were same—in bigger cubes and higher layer. This structure is so unshakable and steady.

When Lily moved to Canada, she saw so many unshaped and lovely free people. But soon after she settled, she realized Chinese might never be able to enjoy the same wildness and rawness. For such a high population density and without seizing from countries or replying on some charity groups, everybody has to self-control to guarantee the benefit of the country and the survival of one fifth earth population.

Now Lily loves and misses China more than ever. Seeing far away from another side of the earth, she’s attracted by Chinese artificial, orderly beauty.

The book, “Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus”, written by John Gray was one of the #1 New York Times Bestseller. I read it around ten years ago. However, recently, after I read the short story, “Cat in the Rain” by Hemingway, I thought of this book again and want to introduce it to you.
In this book, the author described men and women as being from different planets to have readers understanding the totally different between man and women. The inspiration of the book came from one quarrel between the author and his wife. During the quarrel, the author wanted to go out of the home and got a calming down for himself and his wife—it is also the most usual behavior that every other husband select to do when a quarrel happened, but what his wife said, “You are a fair-weather friend! As long as I am sweet, love me you are here for me, but as soon as I am not, you walk right out that door. But now I am pain, I just need your arms around me”, changed his mind and let him thought deeply the reason of the quarrel between two each-loved persons and why it was so easy to solve the problem when he changed an angle to face the crisis. Liking in his case, just a hug for a few minutes, the couple got back their loves and trusts.
“Although almost everyone would agree that men and women are different, how different is still undefined for most people”. In this book, the author particularly analyses the different between men and women, including instincts, modes of thinking, pattern of communication, motivation points, and hobbies etc. According this analysis and some examples, the author give reads more advices about how to dead with the relationships between husbands and wives.
Marriage means not only passion and excitement, but also more everydayness and sometimes even depression and frustration. How to face those questions is a common problem to all married people. So it is your duty to pay more attention on how is the feeling of your husband or wife and make the marriage containing more quality. For this reason I introduce this book to you.

More than Enough

It was eleven o’clock, and the store was getting busy. I was working on cash register. My customers were coming continuously.

An old lady, followed by an old man,(may be his husband or friend) came to me, dropped her stuff at my till and started talking. “How are you today?” She asked.

I gave a smile and said, “I am fine. How are you today?”

“Well, I am still sleepy. Last night we went to a ladies party and we drank a lot, so now I have a hangover. I am used to drinking a cup of coffee at 10.am, but this morning I found we ran out of coffee.”

In between our conversation she said, “That is not mine. He should pay for it himself”.

The man behind her said, “Would you pay for it? I would give you cash, but I don’t have any today”

She said, “No! You can pay by your credit card.”

He said, “If I am going to use my card then I can bring my other stuff too,” and he went back.

In between I was looking at my other customers trying to give them an apologetic smile. I finished with her. Instead of leaving she waited for him and continued to bug me while standing by my checkout.

“He always loves to shop with my card. And at the end of the month, when I would receive my credit card statement, he would fight with me,” she said.

I looked at her with surprise. “But why?” I asked.

“He is cheap. He doesn’t want to spend his money” she answered.

She said, “Instead of buying his own things, he uses mine. He drinks my liquor, borrows my car and tries to shop with my card. He always tries to save his money.”

Then the man came back with a few more things. I quickly finished ringing through his sale before he said something.

She held his hand and gave me a smile and went out. She was acting like she didn’t say anything against him.

I took a deep breath and whispered, “Thank God she is gone otherwise I don’t know how much more personal information she would dump on me.”

I like friendly people, but there is a limit to everything. People don’t think dumping that much information can create problems for them. Rather than open people, I would like to attend wordless People.

A Walking Joke

“What are you happy for?” or “What are you laughing at?” My classmates would ask me sometimes. The reason for that- I tried to show my teeth whenever I saw them smiling or laughing as I did not understood their jokes and sarcasms at all.

I was new to the culture and to the community in Russia.

Sometimes I would realize those jokes, but there was still the problem of timing. I was late. Always. Late. Because of my delayed reaction, I became a “walking joke”.

There was also the biggest of all communication problems- expressions. We were supposed to volunteer for disabled elders to help them in grocery shopping. One of the elders asked my classmates to clean the toilet in her house.

While students were exchanging their experiences the next day, I overheard the unusual request of the elder.I asked, “Did you clean it?” the answer came with a disappointed mode, “Three times!”

To hear some rude girls can volunteer to clean toilets…?

“You cleaned it three times?” was my surprised question.

What do you think was the postponed reaction of the group? After exchanging looks, “Ha ha ha ha…” everyone started laughing at me.

I was the “Walking Joke” again.

I learnt later that the expression “Three times” meant NEVER.

The other thing I learnt was to be frank in expressing your ideas and thoughts. It does not work in Canada though. You have to be more diplomatic here.

I am in trouble because I am new all over again.

“What do you think it is that we need in order to be saved from this Global Financial Crisis?”
Asked an the old man, while we were waiting for the bus to arrive.

“We need something like the invention of fire, or maybe a technology that will surpass the abilities of the computer,” I replied.

“Yes, something like that can save us, but kid, Einstein has been dead for a long time,” he said laughing. “But, you know what? The only thing that can change the world right now as it, and make every country powerful and stable is the big three letter word, WAR!”

“War?” I asked, wondering how could it change the world.

“Huh! You know what kid, war saved the Americans from the depression in World War-I and in World War-II and it sure save them ones again in a World War-III. War is Business, War is Money.”

I honestly didn’t know how war saved the economic and financial stability of America. But there is one thing I know. Another World War can not be allowed to happen.

“If War would arise in the middle of the crisis, countries will surely fall for it. Ones again they will side with one another and will start forming their alliance. The thing is, it is going to be catastrophic.
The modern war would be mass destruction, nuclear weapons and bio-chemical like maybe anthrax can easily wipe out a large part of the worlds population, land fields, water and other living things.”

“Good answer kid,” he said while tapping my shoulder, as if he’s telling me that I’ve guessed what was on his mind. “But, They all have got to happen. In order for things and lives to be restored, things and lives has to be destroyed. In order for us to reach a successful future, we have to overcome an unforgettable past.”

“How can you say that? Are you crazy? Even you and your love ones may die in this war, and you still think that it is the right thing to do? And how could someone possibly move on after series of nuclear and bio-chemical attacks all over the globe?”

“I will tell you exactly how it will end. The weak countries and its people would vanish from the face of the earth, all that will remain from them is their wretched, value-less soil and maybe, just maybe a few survivors with mental or physical deficiencies. At the only the strong will survive. The power would be in the hands on the remaining nations.”

“That is surely one of the maddest things I’ve ever heard, next to Bible’s Book of Revelation.”

“Like I said kid, they’re all written and has to be fulfilled,” he said, as if he had already lived in the future. “ Oh. Yah, I almost forgot, do you have two dollars? I have no money for the bus fare.”

I gave him a dollar.

“Thanks kiddo! May God Bless You!” He said while running away, going towards the group of people getting off the bus on the opposite street.

And just like that, our conversation ended.
