Online Notebook: Random Image or Word

This week, go to a favourite magazine (or check one at the supermarket cashier or friend's house) and open it at a random page. The first word or image you notice will form the original idea for your piece. Write no more than 200 words in multiple paragraphs.

A full page image of a woman`s unclothed torso from the side (yep, my daughter`s Cosmopolitan) with two circles drawn on her flesh to show where she might consider having cosmetic (plastic) surgery.

Yes, so instead of admiring the good form of the woman, I`m supposed to think something is wrong with her. The myth of "perfectibility" of a woman`s body is what`s at issue here. And the objectification of the person, too, since the photo is just her torso; the rest of her is unimportant to the point being made, it seems. I`ve heard that total operations are down in the world of cosmetic surgery. What a relief!

When I saw the picture of Chris Brown arrested right before Grammy Awards on People magazine, of course, I wasn’t surprised at all because that happened most of time in Hollywood. Do I shock at this? No, because I’m immune to the story now.

Of course, I wasn’t like that at first. At first, I was so shocked and surprised to hear "Hollywood’s news," and I couldn’t wait to search why that happened, and how. I was so shocked when Britney Spears, for example, went insane and why she acted that way, I was curious at that point, but that story went on and on in different styles, I was so sick of it and immune to the stories they told us.

I hear the news now and then, but not that seriously not because I care, but mainly because I don’t have anything else.

The caption read "Dad at 13". Suffice to say my mouth completely dropped in shock. I couldn't even begin to fathom anyone of that age in such a position. Trying to picture myself in that boat was difficult enough. Could I handle that kind of responsibility at the age of 21? Probably not. There is far too much to consider. So the more i tried to understand that 13 year old's dilemma, the more baffled I became. How is he going to provide for that child, when he is merely a child himself?

Its a very scary thought. Too know that someone so impressionable and young wanted his own family. It seems that younger and younger people are taking into this trend. Many of them have their own reasons for doing so. But it all has the same end result. Someone entirely incapable of providing for the child they bring into the world.

Dream and Truth

Not many people can enjoy the economic recession, but I’m one of them, even with my fortune shrinking like a pretty virgin getting married. The falling price of real estate made me pick up my old dream of having a property in Vancouver again.

After receiving my favourite magazine—International Architecture & Design for this month, opened it and found an amazing house, named as Cliff Dweller, my daydream become visualized, a big house located on a spot with breath-taking view, surrounded by greens and fresh air, my horse walking in the back yard and a handsome dog welcoming me home. . . .

“So, if you seriously like this apartment, I can try to offer them fifty-six thousand and see how they respond. This is really a good timing to buy; last year it was Sixty-nine thousand. . . ” my agent called me again for a five hundreds squarefeet apartment with one window open to the ocean but with the another one you can jump to the next building on Grandvile Street.

“Hey! Wait a minute! I don’t even finish my dream yet!”

The Effect Effect
I was attracted by the strange title--” The Effect Effect” in the magazine “Spectrum”. Browsing it quickly, I found it listed over decade of the “effect”. Most of them are new and hard to understand.

I knew some of them: the Doppler Effect, the butterfly effect, and the greenhouse effect. But I am rarely to hear the poverty effect and the wealth effect. I never heard about the lipstick effect, snob effect, the revenge effect. However, those new words are pouring out every day and sprawling here and there.

The word effect has been effective at naming things. It has branched out into our life. Some, as a sign, are brilliant and make us associate. Others are junk. Some people eager to create and offer them a special odd meaning. They call them “new “ and enjoy doing that. Even these words exist only in a short time period or at a small local area. --Lacking of deep sense and idea, how can they last long?

I never accept and cheer all these “new” things without thinking whether it is good or not. What is “The Effect Effect” on earth is a problem needs us to ponder about.

A small picture of a woman doing her make up was in the corner 0f”PEOPLE” magazine. It didn’t attract me, but the heading “Holly‘s Beauty Tips” made me read that corner.

She says, “My life is easier with less make up. “ It is hard to believe when I saw her picture because in the picture her face is multi colored- means full of make up, but I like the suggestion Holly made, “If you have to wear one thing, wear blush! It gives you a youthful glow.” I agree. My pink cheeks show me as a happy, young, and healthy person. Also, most woman want youthful glow. You can try that (yourself.

Take a magazine from a book shelf and open it at random, a page in the middle arrests my attention. A big, blue and white porcelain bowl of the sea food soup fills in the full page. The soup is thick and crystal-clear. I can see all the things through the soup----sea-cucumbers, prawns, scallops, and embellished with three pieces of green leaves of vegetable. A soup spoon is over the bowl, and a soup-drop was dropping from the spoon to the bowl.

This is a kind of light flavoured Chinese soup, and it is very nutritious. I am stimulated by the picture, and feel a good appetite at the moment. I quickly go back to the catalogue and find out the soup’s recipe. After fixing everything of the recipe in my mind, I plan to make the soup for supper. I can expect my cooking skill will be admired by my husband and my son.

A magazine was on the table. I glanced at the cover and I could hardly figure out who the man was on the cover page. As I carefully looked at it, I recognized Patrick Swayze, a famous movie star in Hollywood. I like him, his films “dirty dancing” and “ghost” are my favorite. The magazine also offers the information that he is suffering from cancer. Patrick in the picture looks old and fragile although I believe he has made great efforts to try to show his best conditions in front of the camera. I have never thought he have changed like that. So all I can say is time is cruel and illness is ruthless.

On a page of my favorite magazine, Twist, is the photo of Robert Pattinson. Almost any Twist magazine I flip the page of, he is there and it astonishes me.

I rarely used to see him since he played the role of Cedric in Harry Potter. I did not even know his real name by then.

But since he played the role of Edward Cullen in Twilight, he is on YouTube, in magazines and the main thing people focus on is his hair.

He is also going to play his role again as Edward in Twilight sequel New Moon.
But will New Moon take him a step ahead or a step back? I can’t wait to see the result!

The headline of magazine “allure” In March 2009 is “Julia Roberts returns to the spotlight”. The actress of famous “pretty women” is revealing her life as a mother of 4-year-old twins Hazel and Finn, and Henry, who is almost 2.

The child bearing and family life seems to be the focus gossip of all the Celebrity. After all, all the movie stars are all human. People tend to squeeze out the favour of their family life such as “Angelina and her girls went shopping”.

The actual age of all the movie star also excites me; some of them already reach the age of 40 or higher, but they still look so brilliant. It makes me believe, age is not the reason to give up pursuing beauty.

Openning "The Oprah Magzine," some
eye-catching words were drawing me:
"You're only as old as you want to be." That's a full page of
advertisement for number one New York Times bestselling author Robin
McGraw's book,"What's Age Got To Do
It?" On the red cover, a woman is sitting on a number of "55."

What an attractive topic! As a female, I believe being afraid of
getting old is the problem of most
of females. Honestly, sometimes I have a strong desire to live "only
as old as I want to be." Yet, my rational cognition tells me: spiritually, that could be, but
physically its impossible. As time
gose on, we should renew our mind-set for new recognition about beauty, not our bodies! Accepting
natural laws make you living a happier life!

The word I first saw is Rule.

People are so obsessed in making rules. I remember the first time I played basketball.I was so happy to run with the ball with my hands and throw it on the rim. It was only until my cousins told me about the rules of the game. That I have to dribble the ball, that I cant run with it on my hands, that Id be fouled out if I make six fouls in a game and so on . After that, everytime I play, I was so focused on the rules and regulations that I stopped enjoying it. It has become stressful. We do not need rules for everything.

There is one basic rule in my family, one should get a degree. I believe, this applies everywhere in the society. It is the basic belief that in order to succeed in life, you need to get a degree. Doctors, Teachers, Nurses, Lawyers needs a degree, but not gardeners, painters, sculptors, even sewers. I don’t think they need to go to a university or college to get a degree a diploma or a certificate. What they need, I think, is a great teacher or mentor and their talent for them to succeed.
