This time, make a note of something about the physical world around you. Try for an observation you've never made before.

Online notebook, oct.15-oct.29:

Finally, a mystery man is solved. It all started when I took a bus from school several days ago. A strange man looked like Brad walking along the street. And of course, I thought could it be, could it be really Brad because he dressed the same way as in a writing class except he wears a hat and/or sunglasses. And finally, yesterday when I wait for the bus to come, Brad came by and the mystery man is solved!

I was in a small restaurant and was standing in front of the bathroom door. It was a single occupancy room so I had to wait for my turn. Five minutes passed, and the door was still shut closed. The food that I ordered was already served on my table. (I had to use the washroom before it gets cold.) I knocked a few times, no one responded . I knocked a few more times, still, no one responded. I put my hand on the door knob and turned it clockwise, it wasn’t locked. But, I thought that there might be someone inside, so I decided not to open the door, and waited a few more minutes.

“Are you going to use the washroom?” A man asked.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Why don’t you get inside then?”

“There is somebody inside, I believe.”

He walked towards the door, put his hand on the knob, opened it (without knocking) and to my surprise, it was empty.

Back on my table, while I was eating my breakfast, I found my self thinking about the bathroom incident.
A lot of times, it happens to us. The feeling of being scared on what lies behind every door. The thought of something unknown makes us uncomfortable and unsure. We often put our hands on the door knobs, but our uncertainties stops us from pushing the door open. Opportunities in life, works in the same manner. Everyday, every morning we wake up, breathe and feel the sunlight on our face, the world gives us new opportunities to change or improve our lives. There are treasures scattered all over the word, waiting to be discovered. There are also mysteries that only we can solve. But, how can we discover treasures or solve mysteries of this world, if we are afraid to open public washroom doors!

Marc: Your "bathroom door" story is inspiring, especially as it shows how the little things in life can demonstrate to us what is truly important. In today's paper, I read that 90% of our happiness is the result of our social relationships with other people and not on our material wealth. In these hard times, it is important to remember that I feel.

Today, at the math conference I am attending at Whistler, I went to an overcrowded workshop on a new form of student assessment called "formative." This assessment is a kind that helps students to know what they are doing right and what wrong without any risk of affecting their marks (up or down).

What was most interesting was a fact presented today: if a teacher gives back papers with three kinds of feedback (a mark; a mark plus feedback; feedback only), which do you think would result in the greatest improvement?

If you answered "feedback only" you would be correct. Once a teacher gives a mark, the student shuts down and ignores the feedback completely.

Interesting!
