An Online "Notebook"

As Keith Gray says, "Good writers are good observers." This week, pay attention to your surroundings (see the handout for more ideas) and put your short observations here for all of us to share. You don't need to write anything long or complicated. Just tell us what you saw or read or overheard. Have fun!

Here's a link to Keith Gray's short video on Ideas and Inspiration. You can also find the information sheet here in word format if you missed Thursday's class.

On my way to dinner I overheard a woman on a cellphone (why do people walk and talk I wonder) saying, "I'm just so fed up with him" as she passed by.

Then, shortly after a fancy two door silver Mercedes sports model blasted his horn at a Prius taxi that was running the light at the corner of 8th and 6th. And I mean he really laid into the horn. It wasn't a fair contest, but the Prius taxi did honk back. They both stopped in the middle of the intersection (briefly) and I wondered if one of the drivers was going to get out or not. Fortunately, not!

I was standing at the front of the Skytrain door,on my way home from work, when a lady boarded at Metrotown station. She was about in her early 20's and about 5'6 tall. She was wearing a long white dress that was embroidered with red flowers and white beads.
Her Long and shiny black hair was cascading,- almost up to her elbows.

She have second most beautiful face I've ever seen, I thought to my self- the first,of course is my mother's. Her Hazel-brown eyes were tantalizing-I was hypnotized.
Her cheeks were rosy so as her lips. And the smile, looking at her smile was like opening a birthday present; you cant take you eyes off it.

That morning, an Angel rode the Skytrain. And her smile made my day.

i remember when i was waiting for my mom to pick me up at Caplino College, one woman was getting out the car, and walking passed by me... the woman looked like kind of prostitute to me because she was wearing a very short skirt that everyone can see her upper hips with fishing net stockings, and very high heels that nobody could've worn unless they're crazy, i still don't know how could she worn that "thingy" to the school...

Then, the funny thing happened, the woman was walking straight, without knowing there's a rock on the ground... of course, she fell to the ground, and everyone on the campus, including me laughed out loud, and her face was red with embarrassment, but she kept walking with her nose up high...

The man, in the Save-On-Foods store, was walking fast and speaking non-stop. No one was around him. He was going from a line to another line without any attention to others. Everybody was watching him astonishingly. Some people just keep watching him even when he passed them by. I wondered how he can speak without taking any break or breathe. I was angry with people too, “Hey, you`re not speaking to yourself? What are you looking for? He just forgot not to speak to himself aloud!”

My young sister and I were sitting in the chairs waiting to have face skin care in a beauty salon. There was a row of chairs against the wall and two women sitting there. The one woman, with a towel turban and a green face allover expect for an oval around her mouth and two eyeholes, was leaning back, and she looked asleep.

The other woman was reading, with her bare feet propped on cushions. Her toenails were painted bright pink and the toes were spread apart with cotton balls.

I looked at my young sister, who looked back with a “yikes” look and then leaned over and whispered to me, “Those feet look like hands.”

I glanced over and saw it immediately. Two skinny hands with little stubby fingers all spread out like someone saying “stop!” Giggles bubbled up from the bottom of my stomach. I tried to turn them into coughing. The woman glared at two of us over her book. My young sister, the un-expressive face, just sat calmly looking into space.

There are leaves falling "under" my porch roof. I have a grapevine, so as the wind blows my grape leaves flutter down onto my barbecue, my table. Then my little black dog comes in with one atop her head (to match the leaves stuck to her legs).

All around my neighbourhood, fairy rings of Amanita (deathcap) mushrooms have popped up. The mushroom is the size of a baseball, red, and covered in white, barnacle-like, bumps. Some of the rings were kicked to pieces on Halloween. That was a shame as the last time we've seen these mushrooms was about seven years ago!

At Metrotown station, where I stood awaiting the sky train, were two drunken men and the other one still held a bottle of beer in his hand. The train came and we all boarded. A middle-aged man sat in the corner of the train. Suddenly, the drunken man who held the beer bottle poured the beer on the quiet man who sat in the corner, but this gentle man sat as if nothing happened.

Then an old woman in her fifties or sixties, shouted. “Stop pouring that stinky thing on the man!”

The drunken man shouted back, “shut up old date!”

Old woman, please keep quiet before this drunken man beat you up, I thought. Luckily, the sky train was at Edmonds station. Horrified by the scene, I jumped out, and wondered what would happen if that woman kept interfering non-stop.

The Beauty of the Maple Leaves

In the late October, maple leaves were still flowery. They soaked so much red and golden that after they fell on the green grass, the color still looked vivid and attractive like firework showing in the dark sky. Adults took pictures under the trees along the road; kids picked up the leaves, played and piled like playing snow in the winter. Might dogs want to play too— they wagged their tails, watched the kids, asked a stop when they passed by.

A Little Trick

There are always some animals haunting around my apartment: several squirrels, a big black cat, and some pigeons and many crows. I must say Chinese are not the fans crows, they think they are the symbols of bad luck.

Whenever my husband hears there are crows hooting in front of our windows, he will think some bad luck is coming, like he won’t be favoured by the god of gambling that day in casino.

I like crows pretty much, although they are very loud. They are one of the most united fowls. Once one crow finds some food, it would cry loudly so all crows could come and share.

Yesterday evening, I was very boring staying at home along, when my husband went to casino again as his daily routine. I found some stale crackers and separated them into small pieces. I put those crackers on the balustrade of my balcony and totally forgot it.
Today, after a long day hanging outside with my friend, I came back home and see my husband staying at home. I asked him what happened. Why not go to casino today?

“I cannot,” he said desperately, “this morning I got up and went to smoking on balcony, there are seven crows standing there fighting for something. My luck was totally blown away by them. I have never seen so many crows so close to me before.”
I suddenly thought about the crackers I left yesterday then started laughing until my stomach feeling pain.

One day, I went into a Tim Hortons , bought a cup of coffee , and sat by the window. I looked out of the window and saw a truck with “dairy supply” in its body stopped by the curb. I noticed its windshield was broken and a policeman spoke to a man, who looked like the diver of the truck. At this time, an old couple sat another table beside me.
“What happened there? Something is stolen?” The old lady said.
“Stole what? Cream?” The husband replied.

Along the central lane, our bus was running its way at a normal speed.

Suddenly a black sport car over the solid yellow line from the left cut in. Our bus driver honked him and cursed: “This young man!”

No sooner the sport car accelerated than it decelerated, for a dumpling truck before it. Our bus overtook him at once, and our bus driver honked him again with a ridicule appearance.

After the dumpling truck turned right into a street, the young man’s car rushed again like a rabbit. Just a while he stopped at the red traffic light, and our bus caught up with him again. The bus driver honked him once more, opened the window, and shouted to him: “It’s the same rate alike!”

When I drove along the Marine drive yesterday aftoon, afar off I saw a crow was standing by the side of the road. I noticed that it totally ingored the stream of cars that passed by it like a storm. When I passed, I found that it stood in front of a carcass of crow that had become too badly mangled to be recognized. It stared at the carcass of its own kind so concentrated that without giving me a glance when I drove by. If they were a couple I wondered. This picture has lingered on my mind in the rest of day, even though up to now.
