A Simile a Day Keeps the Doctor Away!

Post your simile example here according to the schedule made in today's class.

You are also required to comment on one (or more) other student examples during the week. Does the simile help make the idea understandable? Is it fresh and interesting?

Her hear is like sunny summer day, long and golden.

Zarghoona,

Her hair, like a sunny summer day, is long and golden.

Good! My suggestion above.

Her dark hair is as long as moonless winter nights.

She is like a butterfly, beautiful and full of energy.

Hi Zarghoona. Nice to see you experimenting. I'm not quite sure whether the length of her hair can really be compared to something like the passage of time on a moonless winter night. Perhaps if you concentrated on colour it would work better; hair as dark as a moonless winter night, for example.

Hi Brad,

I compared the length of the hair because nights in winter are longer than in other seasons.
Or I can make the simile this way:

Her hair, like moonless winter night, is dark and long.

Time flies fast as an arrow,
The sun ups and downs like a shuttle;
Some young person live as if drunk and dreaming;
They never know: a bit of time is value than a piece of gold.

Hi Hongxin,

Time as an arrow is a bit of a cliche, so needs to be fresher.

The sun climbs up and down like a shuttle (do you mean a shuttle as in a loom for weaving?) If so, it's a good analogy.

Some young people live their lives as if they are drunk and dreaming, not knowing that a bit of time is more valuable than gold.
So true! Most do, probably, but no young person knows, as we do, how fast time flies!

Snow flakes, like white flowers, are falling from heaven.

His skin is as rough as sandpaper.

His guffaw is as loud as rumbling thunder.

Hi Suzanne,

I like your simile about “guffaw”; I have a co-worker having a roar of laughter, which sometimes comes so suddenly "as rumbling thunder", that scares me.

Brad said...

Suzanne,

I agree with Zarghoona that the guffaw is the best of your three. What kind of "white flowers" are you thinking of?

Your skin simile is a cliche.

Joni Mitchell (Canadian singer) once said this about snow in her song, Hejira: "As snow gathers like bolts of lace/ Waltzing on a ballroom girl."

Knowledge is like a gorgeous pearl necklace reflecting the beauty of a lady; however, wearing too many pearls is tasteless. Knowledge is power should be considered with intelligence for women.

Brad said...

Helena,

Lovely. A suggested rewrite:

Knowledge is like a pearl necklace reflecting a woman's beauty. Beware. Wearing too many pearls shows bad taste. Using knowledge needs careful consideration by intelligent women.

She appeared in his life like a fresh spring morning after a long winter.

Brad said...

Emilia,

And he's very happy about that!

His song is like spring breeze warming her heart, like the light in dark illuminating the road.

Brad said...

Max,

Ah, my students are so romantic! You've done a double simile here, good.

His song is like a spring breeze warming her heart, like a light illuminating a dark road.

emilia said...

Is this a little bit better?

His words flog like an icy wind.

Brad said...

Emilia,

Oooh, that's a nasty thought! Not to worry about being too "nice" using similes, however. The nasty ones are just as interesting.
