A “Green Tea” Teacher

Among many PALC teachers, their teaching styles vary. I like to compare their styles to different kind of beverages. Some teacher with vivid and energetic attitude is like a cup of coffee which can fresh your mind; while some with critical and humor mind is like a glass of scotch, bitterly strong but inspiring; not to mention some vigorously speedy helper with sunny smile is like 7 Up, splashes its enthusiasm into you, and so many more other teachers. But, Cheryl, my Civic and Law teacher, is none of those. I would rather comment her style as green tea style: it is mild, a bit bittersweet, and unforgettable.

Perhaps because of the subjects she teaches, she is not as popular as other teachers. Seriously, as an adult student, who is willing to consider politics or Law into his or her career plan? It is tough, it is complicated, and it is no fun! That is why fewer students really buckled to those courses which require higher level of awareness and logic thinking. However, once you do approach the higher level, you don’t want to miss the chance to take her classes. No matter you are a resident or citizen, it is nothing wrong to know something about politics, citizenship, and your legal rights. You will get benefits from what you learn.

Cheryl is kind of teacher who doesn't want to urge her students. Because the course is kind of hard, she never pushes us on our homework in hurry, but we know if we didn't catch up, we would not be able to follow the coming chapter for sure. Therefore, we don't like to have our homework overdue. In stead of asking many questions in law cases which often scare us, Cheryl would rather answer our questions based on everyone’s interest. Some young student is curious about drugs; some adult student has a concern about impaired driving; and others may question about citizen’s arrest. No matter what they ask, Cheryl seems always to be aware of what they confuse about and give every one a clear explanation. Like a counsel, she is ready to give you advice, on condition you must ask. That is why we always strive to hands up in the class.

I guess the contents of these courses have somehow shaped Cheryl’s teaching style--no decoration, no exaggeration, everything has to be as accurate and logic as it should be. Not like literature, passionate words and rhetoric don't apply in Constitution and Law, do they? During her class time, Cheryl usually projects a ppt note which briefly explains the legal concepts or civic deliberation. Her ppt demonstration seems to absorb every essential part of the course that you dare not want to miss unless you mean to fail it. I always wonder if she can give us the copy of her note, but I know she won’t, because she wants us to squeeze our minds to figure out the answer by ourselves. She prefers to let us taste the bitter at first and the sweet afterwards.

When you are impetuous and fickle to do something, you probably need to calm down and have a cup of green tea. You may feel its mild taste slowly going through from your tongue to your stomach and eventually bring you a rational thought. Even though, you are doing something else later, that taste still lingers in your mouth, and you will miss it sometimes. That is what I feel about Cheryl’s teaching. I hope I can take her courses again, if I am allowed.

Being a student at PALC, Teachers and Laboratory Department are important.

Do you have a dream to update your education? You may start now and go at Pearson Adult Learning Centre and talk to the teachers over there how to go on your heart’s desire to finish high school. I believe learning is everyday and it is for everybody.

Although I had my degree in my own country, I realized that living and working here in Canada -- I have to standardize my education. Yes, I took a step in taking some refresher subjects in this centre. First, I took a Biology 12 subject under Mrs. Tazim. She is a very kind and intelligent teacher with a mastery of the subject. I also enjoyed this course as I have discovered many different scientific systems inside our body that I believe there is a powerful God who made it for a human being to exist.

Second, I am currently enrolled in Writing 12 at the PALC. Mr. Brad is our teacher in this subject; he is very lively and an encourager to us to write on many topics under the sun. This subject is very interesting because you can use your English comprehension in listening, writing, reading, and vivid thinking. Additionally, you will learn how to make a book review, limerick writing, and other poetic devices. I am beginning to love this subject because I can write on any topics assigned using my vivid imagination in writing and hoping I could improve my ability in this course. In the class, Mr. Brad, my classmates and I are doing a random warm ups on the topics taught. As soon as we are done with our work, we check each one’s work at random where we could see our errors or avoid what not to write on our written essays. In this way, we can see the areas to be improved. The subject flows smoothly as Mr. Brad is always there to coach us how to become more imaginative and effective in writing on different topics.

Third, after my class in Writing 12, I go to the Laboratory Department to continue my self-paced Mathematics subject. Laboratory Department is in the middle room of PALC. It has few tables in the middle and in the four sides of this room surrounded by some chairs and computers. There are some book references and answer sheets available on the shelves where the students can check their assignments with the correct answers. Whenever I find a hard chapter in Mathematics, Mr. Paul is always there at the Laboratory Department and asked me, “Is there anything I could do for you?” I said, “Yes, I need your help in solving this problem as it’s a bit complicated.” Mr. Paul immediately grabbed a chair, sitted beside me and taught me how to solve and get the right answer. He is very friendly and with a mastery of Mathematics subject. There were times Mr. Paul was not there, and Ms. Jennifer was on duty that time in the Lab, I find one chapter very difficult then I approached Ms. Jennifer. She grabbed a chair, sitted beside me and she showed me how to solve it quickly. Ms. Jennifer is also very friendly and approachable so I have no hesitation in asking her. Once you knew the chapter well, you can ask them to give you the test or answer sheet and take the test.

Lastly, without the help of the teachers available in the Laboratory Department, I would find Mathematics very hard as I took it many years ago. So, students of PALC, if you have something to ask, just don’t hesitate to approach the teachers available there and they are most willing to help you. If you have a strong determination and hard work you will succeed into a greater height in your education.
