Field Work: Magazine Random Write

Open the magazine and (be honest now) let it be a random page. Choose the first and most noticeable word or graphic from the page and get going from there. Remember to concentrate on solid nouns and verbs and avoid using too many adjectives or adverbs.

A Zebra in the Snow?

Right there on page 29 of the February Harper’s Magazine, surrounded by wooden fence.

He seems happy enough. But what is that poor zebra thinking?

How did I get here? This isn’t my beautiful life on the savannah. Turns out that he lives in Cumberland, Ohio at a “conservation center built on reclaimed strip-mining land.”

That got me to thinking about why we strip mine and how we interfere with nature at every turn. And of the article in the weekend paper that informs me that lions in Africa have been reduced to 20 000 from 500 000 in the past fifty years.

Why should I care? Does anyone care?

Nope, I’m certain of it. We care more about bathing our faces in an eerie blue glow, viewing the world through a filter of technology.

I reach the unfortunate conclusion: wild animals are doomed.

A face

On page 116 in Fashion Magazine from February 2011, there is
a face that can launch a thousand ships.

Who is she to me? I think she is a model. A model of what? Let see. She was wearing a silk white fine linen dress. She was surrounded by huge cosmetics and she projects beautification. Look at her face with tantalizing eyes and plumped lips. What else can you see? A well combed blond hair, well shaped eye brows with eye liners, eye make ups and eye lashes. Her face has pink blush-on and her lips were painted with pinkish lipsticks. Also, the shape of her nose makes her stunning. What an expression!

My conclusion is in order to increase sales or to make a saleable business even in magazine advertisements; you need an attractive face that can attract consumers.

“I can drink on the job.”

This was on page 66 of the June 2009 Spin magazine. This quote, from the title page of an article about a female punk rock musician named Brody Dalle.

I found that interesting and it pulled my attention in instantly (also, the fact that three quarters of the page was a sexy black and white picture of her in a revealing tank top didn’t hurt.)

Does this girl have alcohol abuse problems or is she just playing up the part of a rebellious, tough chick image? It could be both. I would have to say drinking alcohol when you need your mind focused and clear will hamper your work regardless of what you do.

I think this is mostly just very smart publicity based on a controversial statement aimed at the magazines punk rock music buyers. This was meant to shock people into reading more of the article. Did it work? It got my attention.
