-Reflecting on Writing 12:
First of all, I can’t believe I took this class twice, and some people are amazed, no rather surprised because even people are getting higher marks in the classes are surprisingly afraid of Brad, and I’m not!
Of ourse, I was, too, afraid of Brad because when I first saw Brad, I immediately thought of him as strict, and ‘regular high school teacher’ type, in other words, I thought of him as boring and ‘stick to the book’ kind of the teacher. But, it turns out he’s fun and I hope that people can notice that.
But I have to admit, the class so far was hilarious and have lots of laughs during the class thanks to Kay’s remarks and Elaine’s laughs. Compared it to last year’s class, I, of course, noticed that was a small class, but fun class. I wish that second term can still be fun, just like we did in the first term.
Finally and surprisingly, I don’t have anything to do more except publishing our stories to buzz and of course, I’d like to read the other peoples’ stories.
All in all, I had a lot of fun going to Writing 12, and writing about our every day life.
Writing 12 second term, here we come!
I've enjoyed the unique and individual personalities in the class the most and how those personalities come out in your writer's "voice." Because the class is small, we can go into depth on the writing together. The time flies by in class, doesn't it?
I'd like to focus more on publication and the necessary revision needed to ready a piece for a wide readership.
I've learned that a big class is not a requirement for a successful Writing 12 and that it is more important that the students want to learn and practice and discuss as much as possible.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this, my first ever, Writing 12 class. It would have been nice to have had such a course in high school, however, I think at this later stage in my life, it's even more satisfying because I can appreciate it so much more.
What I've enjoyed most about the class is Brad's casual teaching style. He makes you feel totally at ease and comfortable to share yourself through your writing, without harsh criticisms or judgment. He allows each student to express their personal style freely, yet gives important guidelines and corrections to improve ourselves. Having been through two colleges and several short courses, I've come to realize that good teachers are not always common.
I've also really enjoyed the assignments given to challenge us such as creating stories, characters, and the "specific nouns" exercise which I found to be great fun. I do love being challenged in my writing because I never know how well I can do until I'm pushed beyond my "comfort zone".
I would like to work some more on story writing to help stir up my ideas and imagination to see what's inside me waiting to come out! I would also love to learn the necessary steps of how one attempts to get their work published. It would also be great to focus on some pieces of "classic" literature from great writers like Hemingway, as well as some great Canadian writers such as Michael Crummey to compare and find out what makes their writing so good.
The most important things I've learned this term are some of the punctuation marks that I was unsure about like certain quotation marks with capitalized letters in dialogue and proper use of the semi-colon. Also, what I found really helpful was some of the views on creative writing from actual authors like in Keith Gray's video when he mentioned that we can borrow ideas from other books and use them in our own stories and yet, it isn't considered "plagiarism". I found that very surprising and interesting.
Thanks to Brad, Kay, and Esther for making one of my favourite school subjects - writing, even more fun!
Last semester in English 12, I have tremendously enjoyed the technical aspect of writing. Weather it was the structure of an essay, poetry tips, writing techniques or effective ways to respond to a piece of writing. Although I’m personally responsible for not putting a greater effort in my writing, but some of the feed backs I received on my papers were not as clear as I would have liked them to be. I’m looking forward to ask questions on how to improve, how to inquire, and how to research other sources when I write papers in writing 12. I believe writing is similar to painting. The more you write, the better your writing will be, but you must also know how to write. Also, watching videos about current issues and events were my favorite part of the class in English 12, and I like to see more of those videos about today’s events in this class and write about it in depth. They help us understand our world better and they give us the opportunity to think about their consequences. Writing is fun. I really want to learn how to write effectively, and I’m looking forward to it.
