Story Idea

Give us a plot and basic theme that you think might make the "bones" of a short short story of 1 500 words or so.

Story Idea:

Protagonist: 40 year old male, successful businessman, married with two children at home, both boys. Likes to have a beer with his buddies and bbq on the weekends. Wife works, too. Has a nanny.

Setting: Trade convention in a nearby city.

Plot: Bert, our protagonist, travels often on business but, until now, has never cheated or been unfaithful to his wife of 15 years. This time is different. He decides it wouldn’t be harmful, especially since his wife would likely never find out. Bert hasn’t counted on chance and circumstance, however, and while with a new friend he encounters someone from home.

Theme: Never count out the possibility that life is full of freak coincidences and funny juxtapositions.

Protagonist: Humdrum man

Setting: airport / plane flight

Plot: H man leads conservative life until he runs into old school mate on business trip that’s somewhat strange and mysterious. They decide to meet again for drinks but things start to happen that challenge the norm that H man has built up for himself.

Theme: Different people can give you insights and perspectives that can change your life.

Protagonist:
Jim, the boy of 10 year old, loves science but hates English, had good command of his mother language, encountering the separation of friends in his home town, the difficulty of fitting in a new place and the impact of peer pressure.

Other characters:

1,35 year old female, a caring mother and wife, with one child at age of 10, a boy. She trapped into a tensed relationship between father and son, and she doesn’t know whom to back up.

2,the husband is a hard working guy but his only interest about his son is the school mark. He used to believe “spare the rod, spoil the child”.

Setting: most conflicts happened at Jim’s home, some were in the school.

Plot: Jim moved to Canada with his parents. He missed his friend and has difficulties to get used to the new place. He became isolated from his school mates and had been rebellious to his parents. His mother tried to help but failed because of the misunderstanding of culture difference. She was facing the dilemma of obeying her husband or supporting her son. Jim’s father was a quick-tempered man who believed punishment can shape a good kid. This family had a hard time during the settlement in a new country, but gradually, they found the way to adjust their value of life, and to build up a better connection with Jim, and so their life move on.

Theme: fitting-in problems, culture shock.

Protagonist:
Min, 35 year-old ambitious male, married a conservative wife (3 years younger than him) and has two daughters--5 and 8 years old. He likes hanging out with his buddies in the beer bars or the food stands at the night market, and sometimes playing Mahjong with a small stake. 250cc motorcycle is his main transport, as most Taiwanese. His favourite sort of movies is Kung Fu and action.

Setting:
Time: The late of 1900s.
Place: Taiwan, the north and the south.

Plot:
Min runs a grocery on the ground floor of an ancient house near the old pubic market. His family is living in the attic of the same building. Although he has steady customers and quite sufficient income, he is still unsatisfied and trying to be well off. However, an event changes his life and the value after involving in the illegally private lotto business.

Theme: Wealth is not the only way to get well lived; the happiness might be just a simple life.

Story Idea:

Protagonist: A married man

Setting: A small city

Plot: Johnny gets hit by a car and all his memories are lost. He looks like a different person now, and he thinks maybe Johnny is already “dead”. He falls in love with another woman whereas his wife used to take care of him. He is suffering from the conflict between him and his former self since he doesn’t want to hurt his wife, whom he totally forgets about. He realizes that it’s time for him to decide who he is.

Theme: A person should to do what he believes. Nobody can tell whether it’s worthwhile or not except himself.

*Nori: age 22, Hayaki’s daughter, quiet, smart, introvert, and later becomes a contract killer.
*Toby J. Lee: age 25, Hayaki & her husband’s son, extravert, talkative, later fall in love with Nori.
*Hayaki: age 39, Nori’s birth mom, a social climber, killed Myra.
*Hayaki’s husband (no name): age 65, Nora Ltd. owner, focused, quiet.
*Myra: age 40, Nori’s adopted mom, kind, quiet, naïve, vulnerable, killed by Hayaki.
*Akashi: age 45, Nori’s adopted dad, quiet, focused, Maru Ltd. owner, later killed by a contract killer hired by Hayaki.

-setting: Japan, The U.S.A.

-Synopsis:
Nori becomes a contract killer to kill Toby J. Lee because he is a son of Hayaki. Years ago, her birth mom, Hayaki abandoned her baby, Nori because she didn’t want her to be born so she just gave Nori to her friend, Myra. Myra raised Nori as her own child, but one day Hayaki decided to take Nori away from Myra. Of course, Myra protected her daughter, Nori. During their argument, Hayaki kills Myra. After their argument, Hayaki realizes she killed Myra, and she hurriedly disguises it as a car accident. As Akashi investigates the car accident, she hires a contract killer to kill Nori’s adopted dad, Akashi. As Nori was saddened by her parent’s death, Hayaki comforts her, and treats her as her daughter. One day, when Nori was about 20 she comes to Hayaki's home and accidently overhears Hayaki killed Nori’s parents. And she decides to have revenge, and she starts to research Hayaki’s background. As it turns out she has one son named Toby J. Lee, and he’s in Japan just in time. She approaches, and leaves him mysteriously. Immediately, he fell in love with Nori, and eventually she fell in love with him. But she didn’t forget her first thing in her mind: to kill Toby J. Lee. As Toby and Nori have a wonderful time together, Hayaki is frustrated because she knew whom Toby’s seeing, so she tries to everything not seeing Nori. One day, accidently during their argument, she blurted out Nori is Toby’s half sister. And his turn to say he secretly married with Nori. After Toby left, Hayaki kills herself and as Toby went to see his wife, Nori, he finds Nori kills herself and Toby kills himself as well at the end.
