Field Work: Closed Eyes in Your Kitchen

Go to your kitchen. Close your eyes for a few minutes. Note smells and sounds. Now, open your eyes and note colours, textures, light, what is on the walls (and etc.).

Write something that begins with "It was there . . ." and use your notes as a guide.

-Field work: Closed eyes in your kitchen.

It was there on the kitchen counter; sitting there, all dressed up and be a ladylike, so pretty. All dressed up as pink and pearls to show elegance, and so glamour because she is about to go to cotillion. So beautiful and so exquisite.

I begin to wonder who’s her partner is, and wondering if he’s bringing a corsage for her. Oh, there he is at the door. She wants me to wait and open the door. And, there he is, look so handsome, and so cute in his tux. As they about to go out, I took a picture. It turned out wonderfully.

I remember when she was a baby; she was so cute and good as a baby. And, when she was in puberty, she was a very good student, and didn’t cause any trouble.

And here she is now, with her partner, fork, looking so beautiful to eat. Yummy… she is so good enough to eat. I can’t wait to eat, thank you for buying this for my birthday!

Looking out a very small window:

Looking out a very small window from the basement onto ground level, there’s not much of a view, only the passersby from knee to toe. That can be fairly interesting—judging who’s who by their lower leg and footwear.

Here comes someone with good taste— must be a business man, argyle socks, expensive brown British brogues, a very smart sporty type, and I'll bet he enjoyed his freshly squeezed orange juice, with a slice of all grain toast, before leaving his Kitsilano two-storey condo this morning. No wife, No kids, O What a Beautiful Morning! Hah! This is great and very humourous.

"Wow! Get a look at those legs". She is not going to be walking too far in those stiletto heels, Maybe her street walking was done during the night and she is now on her way home to sleep through the dayShe may be part of the oldest trade in the world but definitely not the easiest. “Goodnight lady, Sleep well." Oooh! Your sympathy’s clear, Kay

Just look at those saggy jeans and dirty runners. What’s the big deal showing off your underwear? I'm sure he's not job hunting, or maybe he just got off shift, after a long night flipping burgers at McDonalds, his mother’s words ringing in his ears:"You should have stayed in school".
A bit “cranky” but it’s a pretty common view. Are you being too hard on him?
What a great looking pair of Italian black leather oxfordsThe fabric in those slacks have a European flare. I can barely see the edge of a black briefcase. Well, if I was to guess, I'd say he was heading towards the courthouse, someone’s future is going to lay in the decision he comes to this day. "Heavy is the Heart and Hand that holds the Gavel". Is that a song title? Or a saying? Interesting!

Man! Those whites are really whiteHe is either an ice-cream man or heading to St Paul’s Hospital, where he may even save a life today, maybe one who didn't even want his life saved. There are a few cases like that downtown. Last phrase wordy!

There goes a couple of school kids on skate boards. Man those things are noisy. All I can think of is, God love you and keep you safe. I love the look of boys between the ages of seven to eleven; they seem to be so excited with life and have absolutely no fear of death—a wonderful look.

This is pretty well ready to publish Kay!

My Kitchen

Well here goes, my kitchen does not smell unless I'm cooking, and when I'm cooking I not only smell up the kitchen, I smell up the apartment hallway. When I invite my family for dinner, they tell me they know what they are having for dinner as soon as they step off the elevator.

Walls: what I do like in the eating area of my kitchen are the pictures. One that personally pleases me is a very large print of an old fashioned chicken coop. The white chickens are all in a big fluster, some in semi-flight, all headed to the right side of the scene. If you look to the left side of the scene you will see an old wooden fence with broken boards. If you look closely, you can see a fox's nose sticking through the broken fence boards. All animals possess natural instincts regarding danger and so this kicks into effect. Those chickens are really moving out of the way!

One of the things I like about being in the kitchen is that its so colourful, apples, organs, bananas, and strawberries. . . all so colourful and appealing to my eyes. I love comin home to a home cooked meal expectally when its cooked by my mother. Smell of a home cooked meal yumm. . . I call it smell of love cause my mother puts all her hard work at it and it comes out so perfect and dealicious unlike something I cook up but that another story. The kitchen is a great place to unwind, because there's food there. food is a very enjoyable thing, and it causes your body to release happy chemicals. For a brief moment, you are enraptured by the joy of food, and it causes all the stress of your life to melt away. When you have successfully created a dish you reached a goal, and your mind rewarded you for all hard work. Not only is the kitchen a great place to relax because it has food, but it's also a place of quite introspection. I usually go there, even when I'm not hungry, just to walk around and look out the window. It's a place where I can let all my thoughts come together and I can sort things out.The kitchen can also be a very social place, where everyone in the house gathers to make small talk and joke around. You feel connected with others, and it can make you realize that a lot of what you worry about, really doesn't matter. Friends and family are one of the most important things in your life. one of the most important reason that I think the kitchen is a relaxing place, is because for me the kitchen is usually dirty, and every few days I have to clean it.
When the kitchen is out of order, my life is chaotic. When the kitchen is clean, my life has order. In cleaning the kitchen, I once again bring order into my life.

It was there a small kitchen surrounded by white walls and light brown cabinets. A small window with white fence where I can see beautiful small view especially in early spring morning while I make green tea with saffron. I open it when I make fried eggplants or potato chips. Although my kitchen is small and I have to squeeze lots of things together, I enjoy making different kinds of food for my husband and my guests. Persian foods always smells lovely and warm and it makes my mouth full of water even I already had a meal.

When I am in hurry [I am going to school], I am looking at white wall clock on top of window every five minutes, and sometimes its ‘tic-tac make me crazy. I am not experienced cook, and I prefer to take time for cooking to make it perfectly.

My black coffeemaker and smell of coffee is my favourite part especially after exhausting days. My kitchen is the only place I take enjoyable time to make delicious meal for my dear family to show them how much I love them while I did not like cooking.

When I closed my eyes in my kitchen, I can smell a certain aroma. But I couldn’t express what kind aroma it is because English has no suitable words on it. You can smell the aroma when roast sesame-seed in the frying pen.

Mainly Korean foods consist of three parts. One is a bowl of rice, one is a bowl of soup, and others are side dishes. All kind of side dishes are made of various cooking materials but always added several drips of sesame oil. That is because I can smell the aroma when I closed my eyes in my kitchen. Some time there is crust of overcooked rice, called “nurungji” which is more delicious than rice because it has the aroma.

The smell make me fell in homesick always. Suddenly, I am in my house in Korea and I can see the old kitchen in my mother’s parent’s home. All the pleasure of my life was come from the kitchens when I have delicious meal or when I steal a tasty food without notice of others with full of saliva in my mouth.

It was there the most popular tool, a 9-inch stainless pan on my kitchen counter, shining with proud. The small size tells its guests that it works for a small family.
It was there another black-colored semi-sphere pan silenced above the biggest stove. That position always fit in it. Its greasy body reveals that its boss might be a Chinese.
It was there the well-known brand refrigerator. It holds the largest space in the kitchen, of course, by its irreplaceable role and frequented visitation.
It was there a home-made cheese cake. Yellow silk-smooth cheese covers on the soft elastic cake base. Several pieces of fresh red strawberry decorated on the top. The cake is not only a cake; but also a bias just attracting all stomachs in the house, no matter starving or full, gathering them at the same table.
Oh, kitchen, a job center, a survival factory, an exciting play-land for mouth, a criminal hell for weight.
